PURPOSE:To obtain a fiber reinforced composite metallic member having high strength and superior wear resistance while maintaining a prescribed coefft. of thermal expansion by forming carbon fiber-base reinforcing layers on the surfaces of an Al substrate contg. whiskers of SiC, Al2O3 or Si3N4 as a reinforcing material. CONSTITUTION:Reinforcing layers contg. carbon fibers by >=2/3 of the total volume and whiskers of SiC or the like by 20-30vol% are formed on the top 2 and bottom 21 of an Al substrate 1 contg. 24-26vol% whiskers of at least one among SiC, Al2O3 and Si3N4, especially mixed whiskers contg. SiC by >=2/3 of the total amount. A fiber-reinforced composite metallic material maintaining a prescirbed coefft. of thermal expansion and having high strength and wear resistance is obtd.
