<p>PURPOSE:To enable high-strength junction without damaging the joint at the time of melt junction by immersing the terminal of an optical fiber coated with urethane, epoxy, or silicone resin to swell and soften the resin layer, and removing it. CONSTITUTION:The outer circumference of a naked optical fiber 2, i.e., a clad- coated core, is covered with an outer coat 3 made of at least one of urethane, epoxy, and silicone resins. The terminal of the covered optical fiber is immersed into a solvent 5 of trichloroethylene, dimethylsulfone, dimethylformamide, benzene, chloroform, etc., or a solvent mixture of some of them, to swell and soften it. The softened resin is removed to disclose the fiber 2, and it is further freed from the remaining resin 3 by dipping it into acetone, and dried in a strem of warm air. Each terminal of the obtained fibers 2 is butted and exactly centered, thus permitting melt junction with good transmittance and high junction strength without forming any fine scratch or defect on the surface of the optical fiber 2.</p> |
