PURPOSE:To provide the titled fluoride glass suitable for producing an infrared fiber for low-loss communication consisting of TlF, MnF2, PbF2, and GaF3 which is transparent even in the region of infrared wavelength, contains no expensive element, and is easy to melt. CONSTITUTION:The fluoride glass for transmitting infrared radiation is composed of 6-30mol% TlF, 4-30mol% MnF2, 36-63mol% PbF2, and 18-32mol% GaF3. The PbF2 and GaF3 among said components act as the components for forming a network, and the TlF and MnF2 as the components for modifying the network. Each component has no absorption in the infrared region of the range 2.5-9mum, no deliquescence, and low toxicity. In addition, the glass is obtained by mixing a specified amt. of the powder of TlF, MnF2, PbF2, and Ga2O3 with acid ammonium fluoride, crushing, heating, melting, and vitrifying. |
