PURPOSE:To produce a water-based resin having a relatively low acid value, being stable when diluted with water and forming a coating film excellent in dryability, acid resistance, and water resistance, by polymerizing a polymerizable vinyl monomer in the presence of an epoxy fatty acid ester and, optionally, an alkyd resin. CONSTITUTION:95-5pts.wt. polymerizable vinyl monomer (C) is polymerized in the presence of 5-95pts.wt. epoxy fatty acid ester (A) obtained by condensing 30-60pts.wt. fatty acid with 35-65pts.wt. epoxy resin, 0-20pts.wt. polybasic acid (anhydride) and, 0-100mol% polyoxyethylene glycol of a MW of 600- 20,000, based on the polybasic acid (anhydride), and 0-90pts.wt. alkyd resin (B) which may contain a polyoxyethylene glycol of a MW of 600-20,000 as a component. Said polyoxyethylene glycol is present as a component in components A and/or B in an amount of 3-25wt% based on the total weight of components A, B, and C.
