PURPOSE:To decrease a picture signal amount to be delayed by making the effective reading width of a line image sensor arranged this side among the sub- scanning direction smaller than that of the others in plural line image sensors. CONSTITUTION:The line image sensors LS12, LS14 having a large effective reading width and the line image sensors LS11, LS13 having a small effective reading width are arranged alternately in zigzag, and the sensors LS11, LS13 read the picture of the preceding main scanning line while being arranged this side in the sub-scanning direction. Since the effective reading width of the sensors LS11, 13 requiring the delay to the picture signal is small, the storage capacity of the delay circuit is reduced.
