PURPOSE:To produce polyazophenylene in good yields without the necessity of oxygen blowing, by polymerizing p-phenylenediamine dissolved in glacial acetic acid in the presence of a specified oxidizing agent. CONSTITUTION:1-100g of p-phenylenediamine is dissolved in 1 l of glacial acetic acid, and the obtained solution is polymerized at 17-80 deg.C for 0.5-12hr in the presence of sodium perborate in an amount at least equimolar to that of the p-phenylenediamine, or an oxidizing agent obtained from sodium perborate and at least two mol of boric acid per mol of sodium perborate. The obtained polymer product is filtered off, washed with boiling water and dried. USE:Cell doped with iodine or the like.
