The invention relates to a device making it possible to work the soil in different vertical sequences, whilst at the same time chopping the residues of organic material. It consists of a frame 2 of variable length supporting obliquely relative to the ground 0 bars 3 and 4 and jaws 7 and 8 vertically adjustable and having a two-by-two spacing decreasing rearwards. The jaws, which are driven in a translational movement from a circle, work by shearing in a plane parallel to the advance of the tractor. Set back on the frame is a toothed roller having floating elements 17 of adjustable position. The jaws and bars are equipped with teeth mounted on safety devices 6 which carry chopping spikes 21 and which are arranged staggered at a density increasing towards the rear of the tool. The device according to the invention is intended especially for the preparation of fields for sowing and for chopping plant residues. <IMAGE>
