PURPOSE:An agent, containing a specific benzoquinone as an active constituent, and capable of increasing the amount of 2,3-diphosphoglyceric acid (2,3-DPG) in erythrocytes and enhancing the oxygen supply ability. CONSTITUTION:A 2,3-diphosphoglyceric acid (2,3-DPG) increasing agent in blood containing a benzoquinone expressed by the formula (X is halogen; n is an integer 0-4), e.g. p-benzoquinone or 2,6-dichloro-p-benzoquinone, as an active constituent. The above-mentioned increasing agent is effective for reduction in 2,3-DPG found in various ischemic diseases or after surgical operation or in blood transfusion in large quantities or reduction in 2,3-DPG with the elapsed preservation period of a preserved blood. Preferably, the dose thereof is within 10muM-10mM range for direct addition to the blood and within 20mug/kg-10mg/ kg range for administration to humans or animals.
