PURPOSE:To obtain a copolymer for a paint which can give a film excellent in weather resistance, heat resistance, etc., by copolymerizing a specified hydrogenated dicyclopentadiene derivative with a carboxyl group-containing unsaturated monomer and a copolymerizable unsaturated monomer. CONSTITUTION:A mixture is prepared from (A) 20-99.9wt% hydrogenated dicyclopentadiene derivative of the formula (wherein R is H, a lower alkyl or a halogen, R' is a bivalent organic group, and n is 0-1), e.g., tricyclodecyloxyethyl acrylate, (B) 30-0.1wt% carboxyl group-containing unsaturated monomer (e.g., acrylic acid or fumaric acid), and (C) 0-79.9wt% unsaturated monomer copolymerizable with components A and/or B (e.g., methyl acrylate or styrene) so that the total weight may be 100wt%. This mixture is copolymerized by a solution polymerization process, an emulsion polymerization process, or the like to obtain the purpose copolymer for a paint.
