A method for a four-stroke piston engine, in which less gas is drawn in on the intake stroke than would be possible by virtue of the swept volume. The gas is then compressed to a hitherto normal compression pressure, however, which results in an increase of the compression ratio. Such an engine can now utilise, in the working stroke, the full swept volume for expansion of the gas and thereby expand it further than existing engines. This reduces the amount of energy dissipated by way of the exhaust, which is directly related to the thermal efficiency.
