Individual pieces (16) of the material for sorting are fed via a slide (15) onto a disc (4) of a continuously rotating rotary table (3). A number of holding elements (5) which are distributed uniformly over the circumference are swivellably mounted on the underside of the disc (4). The holding elements (5) can be swivelled between an upper holding position in which they retain the pieces (16) and a lower ejection position. The pieces (16) are held on the holding elements and, if appropriate, partially on the disc (4) and guided on a circular track (18). The pieces (16) pass through a detection unit (20) which feeds a control (47) which itself controls release devices (33 to 38) using pulses, corresponding to the number of holding elements (5), from a pulse generator (61). At successive parts (21 to 26) of the track (18), the holding elements (5) can be released by the release devices (33 to 38) from their holding position and thus eject the item (16) carried by them. The ejected item (16) flies off under the effect of the centrifugal force and force of gravity in a tangential plane into an associated interception device (27 to 32) and passes from there onto a transport belt (41 to 46). A cam element (64) finally returns the holding elements (5) which are in the ejection position into their holding position. <IMAGE>
