The invention relates to an apparatus for forming and breaking up stacks of pallets, especially of flat pallets, such as Euro-pallets. The object of the invention is to increase the efficiency of such apparatuses by extending the working range of the stacking elements, reliable operation being intended to be ensured even without special aligning and/or centring devices for the stack of pallets. The object is achieved in that in a frame which can be raised and lowered by means of working cylinders and has vertically mounted shafts, two horizontally pivotable gripper arms are arranged on the said shafts. The gripper arms are jointly pivoted by means of a rotatable base plate, on which the working cylinders and a column which takes over the vertical guidance of the frame are supported, resulting in substantial extension of the working range of the gripper arms. The gripper arms have locating bolts which engage in the individual pallets, and strips for aligning the individual pallet which has been received. The area of application of the invention comprises manipulating processes in which flat pallets are made ready for loading or empty flat pallets are stacked. <IMAGE>
