The object was to provide a device for cross-country skiing which prevents the skier from doing the splits backwards (dangerous to health) with whichever, in the alternating sequence of steps, is the "downward-thrusting ski", and can also overcome ascents in the course in the normal diagonal step. Scale-type coatings and adhesive wax on the running surfaces of the skis are not satisfactory solutions. The device according to the invention for aiding cross-country skiing solves these problems by means of a device attached to the ski ends, the rear part of which projects beyond the ski end and can be folded down. This rear part, which can easily be pressed onto the run by spring pressure, penetrates into the run, in the case of the respective "downward-thrusting ski", with a minimal backward movement of this "downward-thrusting ski", and so provides this ski with an adequate downward-thrusting surface (inserted into the run). In the change-over from the "downward-thrusting ski", in the alternating sequence of steps during cross-country skiing, to the "following ski", the rear inserted part of the device moves out of the run and is virtually pulled forward, in order to be inserted into the run again when the steps next change. Fig. III and Fig. IV in the drawing show the device with the rear part trailing and inserted. Possible uses, apart from the equipping of cross-country skis, also apply, with a suitably increased surface area, to the equipping of alpine skis as climbing aids, and especially also to touring skis. <IMAGE>
