The invention relates to a process for the production of backing materials for fabrics impregnated or coated with plastic materials by the Mali technique using glass fibres, in particular for bitumen reinforcement. The aim of the invention is to produce fabrics made of glass fibres as backing material by a productive process and to employ them for bitumen reinforcement. The invention is based on the object of employing materials having improved wetting properties compared to fluid polymers in stitch-bonded materials made of glass fibres. According to the invention, the object is achieved by preparing stitch-bonded materials, a glass fibre thread, for example a glass fibre ribbon, being used as warp material and a glass silk thread being used as weft material, which are needled with a man-made silk or glass silk thread. After treatment with a polyvinyl acetate dispersion containing hydrophobising agent, the stitch-bonded material is impregnated with bitumen.
