CHARACTER RECOGNITION DEVICE

PURPOSE:To make possible recognition of characters tending to cause mistaken recognition due to character tilting by providing an areawise background density calculating part and performing character recognition by using a featuree quantity indicative of the density in the contour direction of the character and a feature quantity indicative of the background density together. CONSTITUTION:An image including an object character to be recognized is inputted from an image input part 1 and an object character pattern to be recognized is cut in a rectangular by a character cutting part 2 so as to be inputted into a direction code affixing part 3 and a pixel row number affixing part 5. The areawise background density computing part 6 splits the rectangular data supplied from the affixing part 5 in the horizontal and vertical directions and finds the number of pixels corresponding to each pixel row number by using the pixel row number of the pixel point obtained for each split sub-area at the affixing part 5. This gives a feature quantity indicative of the background density which may be used in conjunction with the contour-wise density obtained by affixing part 3 and the computing part 4 to perform character recognition at a recognition part 7. By this, the character tending to cause mistaken recogni tion due to character tilting can be recognized.
