1,019,854. Injection moulding; blow moulding. K. R. ALLEN. Sept. 20, 1962, No. 35768/62. Heading B5A. A method of making a plastic container consists in injection moulding a planar blank having a central portion 15 (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) of approximately the same thickness as the bottom of the finished container, and a surrounding portion 14 which is substantially thicker than the side wall of the finished container, transferring the blank to a blow mould (Fig. 4, not shown) forcing the centre section of the blank down with a plunger 9 so that the side walls stretch and thin, and then expanding the side walls into contact with the mould by suction and/or blowing. The blank is circular and has a diametral cross-section the same as that of a cavity 2. The moulded blank may be transferred to the blow mould while still attached to parts 4, 9 of the injection mould (Fig. 1, not shown), and a thickened rim 13 of the blank is held against the part 4 by the upper edge 19 of the blow mould while the plunger 9 is pushed down and air is introduced through channels 11, 12. Air may also be sucked out of a space 40 through channels 38, 39. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) the blank is not retained on the parts 4, 9, but is attached to the blow mould by rings 43, 44, and a plunger 42, which is not part of the injection mould, is used. |
