PURPOSE:To elevate the measuring accuracy of a telescoping value by a method wherein after a telescoping value is obtained from a specified measured distance value at the diametrical position of a coil, an approximation is made on the measured distance value and the diametrical position of the coil by the secondary regression curve to pass a judgement from the square sum of deviation and the curve coefficient thereof. CONSTITUTION:Laser distance meters 22 are arranged as opposed to each other at the lower end face 10A of a coil 10 moving on a conveyor 20 and outputs thereof and output of a pulse transmitter 24 are fed to a microcomputer 28. The computer 28 takes in the outputs of the distance meters 22 at each signal of the transmitter 24 and traces the maximum value thereof to define it as the measured distance value corresponding to the diametrical position of a coil. When the frequency of continuation showing the data exceeding the upper limit of the measuring range is above the set value, the end of measurement is determined. Then, a telescoping value is determined from the measured distance value thus obtained, an approximation is made on the relation between the measured distance value and the diametrical position of the coil by the secondary regression curve to pass a judgement from the square sum of a deviation and the curve coefficient thereof. |
