PURPOSE:To perform efficient flotation and separation by measuring optically the degree at which suspended matter is mixed with the treated water to be recovered from an overflow pipe and recirculating or discarding the treated water having more than the assigned degree of suspension. CONSTITUTION:Separated water is allowed to overflow from an overflow pipe 12 provided on the outside of a separating cylinder 6 in a floating tank 5 and is admitted into a light transmission pipe 13A communicating with an outlet side. The concn. of suspended matter in the overflow water is continuously measured by a concn. meter 13 constituted of the pipe 13A and when the overflow water in the pipe 13A attains the assigned concn., a signal is issued from a photodetector 13C. The overflow water is then supplied by a changeover valve 14 through one of the ports thereof to a pump 2 or the overflow water having a high concn. is immediately discarded from the valve 14. On the other hand, if there is no signal from the meter 13, the separated and treated water is recovered from the other port of the valve 14.
