The tire has a steel carcass ply (2) wrapped around a bead core (3) up to height h1 and a relatively soft (JIS 45 DEG -65 DEG ) rubber apex strip (SE). A steel cord reinforcing layer (4) surrounds part of the carcass turnup portion (2') up to height h2 while a layer (6) of organic fiber (e.g. nylon) cords is provided outside the steel cord layer and extends to a greater radial height h3 which is 1 &cirf& 3 to 2 &cirf& 5 times h1. Between the carcass ply main portion and the soft rubber apex strip (SE) is a rubber band (HB) of relatively hard (JIS 70 DEG -90 DEG ) material and a ply-filler edge strip (PF) of relatively softer material (modulus 30-80 kgcm<-2>) is joined to the upper edge (4a) of the steel cord layer (4) and extends above and below the upper end (2a) of the carcass turnup portion (2'). …The bead construction is for heavy vehicles and offers improved durability and recapability. ……
