PURPOSE:To prevent generation of patterned scale in pickling of a stainless steel strip by shutting off the surface of the stainless steel strip from the atm. air in the inlet and outlet of each pickling tank in a continuous annealing and pickling line. CONSTITUTION:Sprayers A, B, C are installed between a synchronizing roll 8 and wringer rolls 3a, b, c and water or pickling soln. is sprayed to a stainless steel strips in the inlet and outlet of pickling tanks 1, 2 to shut off the surface of the strip S stuck thereon with the pickling soln., etc. from the atm. air in a pickling section having plural pickling tanks 1, 2 in a continuous annealing and pickling line for the strip S. The shut-off of the steel strip surface from the atm. air is also possible by spraying or enclosing, etc. of a non-oxidative gas in addition to the above-mentioned spraying of the water, pickling soln., etc. The oxidation by the oxygen in the atm. air and the pickling soln. is prevented and the formation of patterned scale is prevented by the above-mentioned method.
