PURPOSE:To obtain a fresh color original reader simple in structure realizable inexpensively by having only to provide an inexpensive stripe filter to an original placing glass as a color separating means to attain the color separation of a color original. CONSTITUTION:In lighting the color original O by a lighting lamp 2, the original part of the color original O on a reading section P is formed to a photodetecting area of a solid-state image sensor 5 and each photodetector element reads the picture element subjected to color separation by a stripe corresponding to the said photodetector. In driving the solid-state image sensor 5 in this state, an obtained electric signal corresponds to the color picture subjected to color separation by the stripe filter. The electric signals by, e.g., (3m-2)th, (3m-1)th and 3m-th photodetectors among the electric signals are reading signals respectively for red, green and blue decomposed picture elements. Since the reading signals of each color separation picture element are missing in the boundary part of them by two elements' share, the color original O is read while applying color separation to it into the three primary colors at each line by correcting and compensating electrically the missing part.
