<p>Fluid-insulated electrical appts. is insulated with an ester fluid (I) comprising (a) one or more esters of methylol- substd. methane, ethane, or propane with a 7-10C straight-chain aliphatic monocarboxylic acid and/or (b) one or more of trimellitic acid with 2-9C aliphatic monohydric alcohols. Pref. (I) are (a) tetraesters of pentaerythritol or triesters of trimethylol-propane with caprylic, heptanoic or pelargonic acid and/or (b) triesters of trimellitic acid with 7-9C alkanols. The fluids can also contain antioxidants and 10-40 vol.% of a flame retardant, e.g. trichlorobenzene, hexachlorobutadiene or tritolyl phosphate. (I) have good dielectric properties, have better fire resistance than petroleum oils, do not polymerise on exposure to high energy electron bombardment, are non-toxic, and can be disposed of by combustion or bacterial action.</p> |
