PURPOSE:To attain high speed information reading processing by providing a similar character table where characters with similar shape are registered at each character being object of recognition and selecting a desired character from the table to correct into the desired character when a candidate character is not a desired character. CONSTITUTION:A character reading by a reading section R is converted into an electric signal, the feature of a character is extracted by a feature extracting section T and a recognizing section S compares the feature of the extracted character and the standard feature stored in a recognition dictionary J in advance. A candidate character similar to the input character is selected by the comparison and fed to a correction section K. The correction section K is provided with a control section C inputting the candidate character from the recognizing section S, and the characters of the 1st ranking-5th ranking in the candidate characters stored in a candidate category buffer B1 are displayed by a display section D by controlling the control section C. The operator observes the display, the desired candidate character is indicated by an operating section L and if no desired candidate character exists, a similar character table B2 is retrieved, the candidate character is displayed on the display section D to correct it to a desired character.
