A test wheel for railway carriages enables measurement of forces applied to the wheel when in use on a rail. Viewing a radial cross-section of the wheel, the outer rim includes a number of continuous bores (3) formed parallel to the wheel axis. Located in each bore are a number of strain gauges (5) which detect wheel distortion under the varying conditions of use. The forces imparted to the wheel are transmitted to the lateral bores (3) through the outer circumferential rim of the wheel (2) which directly engages the rail.
