PURPOSE:To obtain industrially and advantageously the titled compound useful as a polymerizable substance from an inexpensive and nontoxic raw material by easy operation, by reacting a specific orthocarbonic acid ester with 5-norbornene- 2,2-dimethanol. CONSTITUTION:(A) An orthocarbonic acid ester expressed by formula I (R<1>, R<2>, R<3> and R<4> are 1-8C alkyl group), e.g. tetramethyl orthocarbonate, is reacted with (B) 5-norbornene-2,2-dimethanol expressed by formula II in a solvent, e.g. xylene, in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid, etc., and triethylamine is added to the reaction mixture to stop the reaction. The reaction mixture is then cooled to deposit a solid, which is washed and filtered to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula III. |
