NEW MATERIAL:A carbostyryl derivative of formula I (R<1> is H, lower alkyl; R<2> is lower alkyl, formula II; R<3> is lower alkylthio, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, phenoxy, phenyl-lower-alkoxy; X is O, S; where when R<1> is H and R<2> is formula II, X is O and R<3> must not be lower alkyl) and its salt. EXAMPLE:6-(3,3-Dimethyl ureide)-3,4-dihydrocarbostyril. USE:It shows actions of increasing heart muscle contraction, coronary blood flow and hypotensive action, thus being used as a tonic agent for treating cardiopathies such as congestive failure or as a hypotensor. There is no side-effect such as increase in pulse rate, further duration is long and toxicity is low. PREPARATION:For example, the reaction of a compound of formula III with another compound of formula IV (X<1> is halogen) in a solvent, preferably in the presence of a basic compound gives the compound of formula I .
