PURPOSE:To vary the sharpness and granularity of a read image by adjusting at least one of the beam diameter at an excitation destination, the quantity of exciting light reaching a sheet, and a main and subscanning speed. CONSTITUTION:When radiation image information required to have high sharpness picture quality is read out, the quantity of laser light 1b is decreased by a light quantity adjusting means 21 while the beam diameter of the laser light 1b is reduced by a beam diameter adjusting means 21. A control circuit 23 decreases the period of a galvanometer mirror 2 to increase the main scanning speed of the laser light 1b. Then, the control circuit 23 increases the speed of a motor 10 to increase the subscanning speed of the laser light 1b. At least one of said four operations is performed. Thus, the energy per unit area of the laser light 16 illuminating the sheet 3 decreases to improve the sharpness of the read image. The image with good granularity is improved in sharpness. When picture quality with good granularity is required, the opposite operations are performed.
