When treating and storing human blood platelets, approx. 35-45 ml of plasma per unit of blood platelets are replaced with a synthetic storage medium. This synthetic storage medium consists of a buffered Ringer's citrate solution which preferably also contains an oxidation phosphorylation substrate which is permeable for blood platelets. In the resulting blood platelet suspension, the quantity of glucose which is available for glycolysis is preferably limited to less than approx. 10 mmol/litre, preferably less than approx. 5 mmol/litre. The blood platelet suspension is stored in an oxygen-permeable container at approx. 20 - 24 degree C, with it being possible for the blood platelets to preserve their viability for up to approx. 7 days. When such a medium is used, it is possible to save blood plasma, which can be used for other purposes, while the risk of transferring infectious diseases during a blood platelet transfusion is decreased.
