A balance-staff 2 comprises a cup-shaped recess 9 which houses a collet 10 to retain the inner end of a balance spring 16. The collet 10 is radially split at 11 to grip the spring, and has two bearing surfaces 2 and 13 of slightly greater diameter than the recess 9 so that, when fitting the spring, firstly the surface 12 is engaged in the recess 9 to locate the collet and allow the spring to be offered into the split 11, and secondly, the collet is pushed axially to engage the surface 13 within the recess 9 and clamp the end of the spring. The collet has a slot 17 in its upper face by which it can be rotated to adjust the spring.
