In an apparatus for applying and fastening binding material, such as, for example, wires, around articles, with guide frames leading round the articles, with a twisting head, having a radially slotted twisting wheel, for connecting the ends of the binding material by twisting, and with a twisting-wheel drive rotating the twisting wheel into predetermined rotary positions, provision is made, according to the invention, for the twisting head to have a passage channel extending in the tensioning direction of the binding material, and the twisting wheel to be inserted into the twisting head in such a way that the passage channel continues transversely through the radial slot in the twisting wheel, and for the twisting head to have, on its end face confronting the articles, a release gap extending in the tensioning direction of the binding material and reaching into the passage channel. As a result, the start of the wire can be threaded in transversely through the twisting head and the twisting wheel.
