In the case of a trunk piston with variable compression level, in which the variation in the compression level is brought about by two chambers (5, 6) of varying volume to which hydraulic oil is admitted, one of the chambers (5, 6) is arranged at the radial centre of the piston bottom section fixed to the piston pin (2). A sealing washer (7) closing off this chamber (damping chamber 6) and causing the variation in the volume of this chamber is bolted to the piston head (1) by way of a central bolt (8). The bolt (8) simultaneously serves for the accommodation of a pressure relief valve for the space of the second chamber (control chamber 5). The piston is characterised by a construction of simple design and low axial height of the annular section connected to the piston head (1). <IMAGE>
