<p>An apparatus for operating a sewing machine is arranged so that, even if a cloth retainer (6) which retains the object being sewn is moved relative to a needle bar (3), the needle bar (3) is automatically moved to a predetermined sewing start point when the sewing operation is started. For this purpose, the apparatus includes an operating means (JSW) which generates signals for moving the cloth retainer (6) in the X and Y directions, second control means (XDR, YDR) for controlling driving means (XM, YM) which move the cloth retainer (6) in response to the signals, starting means (SW) which generates a start signal for starting a drive source of the sewing machine, and third control means (I/O) which corrects and stores a signal representing the position of the cloth retainer (6) at all times, and which controls the driving means (XM, YM) so that the cloth retainer (6) can be moved from any desired position to the sewing start point in response to the start signal.</p> |
