摘要 PURPOSE:To avoid using an engine as a brake in the range of low speed of a vehicle and effectively operate the engine as the brake, by setting the rate of the rise or fall in an aimed engine revolution speed, as a function of the vehicle speed or the time-differentiated value thereof, to control the running of the vehicle. CONSTITUTION:A continuously variable transmission (CVT) 10 includes an input shaft 12 and an output shaft 14 which extend in parallel with each other. The pushing forces of an input pulley 22a, 22b and an output pulley 24a, 24b to a belt 26 are controlled by oil pressure in hydraulic cylinders to very the radii of engagement of the belt 26 on the tapered surfaces of the pulleys to alter the speed ratio. When an engine brake control start condition has come into existence, an aimed engine revolution speed No is gradually increased until the speed V of a vehicle becomes lower than a prescribed level or the differentiated value V' of the vehicle speed becomes lower than a prescribed level. After the vehicle speed V or the differentiated value V' has lower than the prescribed level, the aimed engine revolution speed No is gradually decreased to a level in the stationary running of the vehicle.
