A process for adjusting the viscosity of an organic liquid, in which a sufficient amount of a copolymer is added to the organic liquid to increase the viscosity of the organic liquid, where the copolymer has the formula <IMAGE> in which R1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 25 carbon atoms, R2 is an alkylene group having 3 to 17 carbon atoms, Z is hydrogen or a mixture of hydrogen and an alkyl group having 1 to 25 carbon atoms, x is from 95.0 to 99.95 mol%, and y is from 0.05 to 5.0 mol%; this copolymer may additionally be complexed with an amine-containing polymer, the complex acting as a viscosity modifier.
