摘要 998,760. Repeater fault locating. STANDARD TELEPHONE & CABLES Ltd. June 26, 1964, No. 26502/64. Heading H4R. In a communication system which includes a number of serially connected repeaters which are arranged to respond to a test signal transmitted from a terminal station by transmitting an acknowledgement signal, successive repeater stations respond to successive test signals transmitted by the terminal station. Each repeater station comprises, Fig. 2, two repeater amplifiers, 13a and 13b, one for each direction of transmission, the amplifiers being powered over the phantom circuits of the two corresponding transmission circuits the amplifiers being connected to take their supply across Zener diode 18, Fig. 5 shows the circuit arrangement at one repeater station which under test condition loops the line at the repeater for both the power supply and signal transmission. Under normal conditions power is supplied along phantom 51 and returned along phantom 52, the controlled rectifier 57 is non-conducting and signal transmission in one direction is via terminal 55a and a transistor 54 to output terminal 56a and in the other direction via terminal 55b and a second transistor to terminal 56b. In order to test the transmission circuit the power supply is cut off, e.g. by short-circuiting the phantom circuit at the terminal station. When the power supply is restored the leading edge of the voltage step is applied via a capacitor to the trigger electrode of the controlled rectifier 57 to cause this rectifier to conduct and complete the power supply loop at this repeater and thus prevent power being fed to the subsequent repeaters. In addition the power supply current flowing in diode 58 causes the right-hand transistors of the pairs of transistors 54 to conduct to connect terminal 55a to 56b and terminal 55b to 56a thus looping the signal transmission channels at the repeater and enabling a test signal transmitted from the terminal station to he returned to the terminal station via the repeater under test. While the repeater is under test, power supply current is flowing through the heater of a thermistor whose temperature sensitive element is connected between the trigger electrode and cathode of the controlled rectifier 57. When the test of that repeater is completed the power supply is momentarily interrupted and the controlled rectifier stops conducting. When the supply is restored no voltage step appears on the trigger electrode of this controlled rectifier because of the low resistance of the now heated thermistor element and the controlled rectifier therefore remains non-conducting. The supply voltage step therefore is applied to the following repeater station causing a test condition to be set up there. Each subsequent momentary interruption of the power supply causes a successive repeater to be put into the test condition. The capacitor feeding the trigger electrode may be replaced by a resistor in which case the test circuit would respond to a slow rate of rise of supply voltage and such a system might be employed where it was desired to energize a repeater selectively, e.g. if in the last repeater the capacitor is replaced by a resistor the line could be brought into operation by a single switching operation without going through the full test sequence. The slow rise may be achieved by connecting a capacitor across the supply line.
