Thermal cell comprising an anode, a cathode, a solid electrolyte and a thermal activation device based on an electrically conducting pyrotechnic composition essentially characterised in that the cathode (2), the electrode (3) and the anode (12) together form a wafer (10), in that the anode (12) consists of a reactive material (chosen from the alkali metals and alkaline earths) deposited in a thin layer on a metal element (4) having a large specific surface and made integral with a metal support (5) serving as a current collector, in that the cathode (2) comprises a reactive material chosen from the higher metal oxides, metal sulphides and mixtures of these metal oxides or of these sulphides and in that, finally, the electrolyte (3) comprises a eutectic mixture of metal halides.
