PURPOSE:To provide a thermal printing head which is capable of high- temperature heating sufficient for a thermal recording ink having a high softening or melting point and has favorable heating-cooling response, by a method wherein color development of a thermal recording paper or transfer of a heat-fusible ink is effected by heat generated on electric discharge. CONSTITUTION:A substrate 10 of the discharge-type thermal head (a) is formed of a heat-resistant nonconductive material, and is maintained in contact with a base film 12 coated with a thermal recording ink 11. The substrate 10 is provided with a groove 13 having a size approximate to the size of a print dot, on the side for contact with the base film 12, and is substantially U-shaped in cross section. A plurality of pairs of discharge electrodes 14, 15 are oppositely provided so as to penetrate through the substrate 10, with tips thereof protruding into the groove 13. In operation, a voltage is impressed between the electrodes 14a, 15a to cause electric discharge, the heat generated heats the film 12, thereby melting the ink 11 on the paper 17 side of the film 12, and the melted ink is transferred onto the paper 17. |
