PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high yield, by reacting thiophenol with ethylene oxide or an ethylene halohydrin in the presence of a base, oxidizing the resultant sulfide compound, nitrating the oxidation product, and reducing the nitration product. CONSTITUTION:Thiophenol is reacted with ethylene oxide or an ethylene halohydrin in the presence of a base, e.g. NaOH, to give a sulfide compound expressed by formula I , which is then oxidized to afford a sulfone compound expressed by formula II. The resultant sulfone compound expressed by formula IIis nitrated to give a nitro compound expressed by formula III, which is reduced to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula IV. The reaction is preferably carried out by using ethylene oxide or ethylene halohydrin in a stoichiometric amount or more and a molar amount of 2 times of below of that of the thiophenol at 20-100 deg.C, preferably 30-80 deg.C. USE:An intermediate for vinyl sulfone type reactive dyes for dyeing cellulosic fiber materials.
