PURPOSE:To decrease the friction of a tape running system and to decrease wear of the tape by coating a thin layer consisting of the carbide, nitride, etc. of group, IVa, group Va or group VIa elements of the periodic table on the sliding contact surface of a magnetic tape consisting of a prescribed member among respective members constituting the magnetic tape running system. CONSTITUTION:A tape 10 emitted from a supply reel 12 in a cassette 11 arrives at a take-up reel 31. For example, a tension post 15, an inclined post 17 and an inclined post 23 among respective members in the above-mentioned tape running system are formed by coating a thin layer of titanium nitride (TiN) as a material corresponding to any of the carbide, nitride or carbonitride of IVa group, Va group or VIa group elements of periodic table on the outside circumferential surface (surface in sliding contact with the tape) of the base material made of a stainless steel. A drum 22 is formed by coating a thin layer of the above-mentioned titanium nitride on the outside circumferential surface of the drum-shaped aluminum alloy base material similar to the conventional device.
