PURPOSE:To automate the positioning of an original by providing a stopper matching one side of the original to one side of scanning face and providing a means detecting the position of the side orthogonal to one side of the original decided by the stopper based on original information. CONSTITUTION:The original face is scanned by a scanning circuit 15. An output of the scanning circuit 15 is fed to an output circuit 16 and an original start position detecting circuit 17. The input from the scanning circuit 15 to the output circuit 16 is controlled by an output of the original start position detecting circuit 17 and the start position of the original is detected, then the output of the scanning circuit 15 is fed to a memory 18 and stored in it via the output circuit 16. Then the size of the original is detected by a size detecting circuit 19 based on the storage information of the memory 18 and the position of the original is detected by the output of the detection circuit.
