Liniment comprises (a) 0.5-5 wt.% of planoprophene (benzopyrano pyridylacetic acid deriv.) of formula (I); (b) 10-90 wt.% mono- to tri-hydric aliphatic lower alcohol, polyethylene glycol having av. mol. wt. 200-1000, MEK and/or acetone; (c) 0.1-5 wt.% gelling agent; (d) appropriate amt. of water-soluble basic substance (enough to neutralise the compsn.); and (e) 10-90 wt.% of water. - Alcohols is e.g. ethanol, isopropanol, propylene glycol or glycerin. Gelling agent is pref. carboxy-vinyl polymer, hydroxyethyl-cellulose, alginic acid or CMC. - The pharmaceutical effect is superior to indomethacin ointment. In rat-test, the carrageenin edema inhibition of the present liniment is 44.2%, whereas that of commercial indomethacin ointment is 28.5%. A percutaneous absorption enhancer is added i.e. isopropyl myristate, diisopropyl adipate, diethyl sebacate or ester of sebacic acid with propylene glycol.
