An improvement to the bead structure of a radial tire consists of: a reinforcing layer of high-elasticity cords provided outside an upward-curled edge portion ofa carcass; an inner protective layer positioned between the reinforcing layer and the upward-curled edge portion; and an outer protective layer positioned so as to be adjacent to the outer surface of the reinforcing layer. These protective layers have a height extending beyond the upper end of the reinforcing a layer. The inner protective layer has cords in substantially the same direction as the cords of the reinforcing layer, while cords of the outer protective layer are arranged in a direction that crosses the cords of the reinforcing layer.
