<p>Novel polymerization process comprising reacting at least one monomeric compound, containing a polymerizably reactive CH2 = C@ group, and an organic reducing agent, in an aqueous medium in the presence of a hypohalous acid, or a salt of a hypohalous acid, said organic reducing agent being oxidizable by said hypohalous acid, or salt of hypohalous acid, to initiate said polymerization, said hypohalous acid, or salt of hypohalous acid, being soluble in the reaction mixture. In accordance with the present invention, there are also provided water-resistant, or water-soluble, products obtained by the aforedescribed polymerization process. When said reducing agent is a polymer, the product thus obtained is a so-called graft copolymer.</p> |
