Toothpastes and mouthwashes that inhibit plaque formation and gangivitis contain an orally acceptable vehicle, a polyvinylphosphonic acid (I) or its orally acceptable salts. with mol. wt. 6000-100,000. Compns. contg. 0.01-10 wt.% (I) are formulated as mouthwashes contg. an aq. alcoholic vehicle and as toothpaste contg. gelling and polishing agents, pref. with pH 4.5-9. A fluoride-contg. cpds., fragrance, and sweetener can be added to the formulations. (I) inhibits attachment of actinomyces viscosus to the teeth. |
