PURPOSE:To perform hydrogenation of liquefied coal without need of a compressor, by bringing a metal which has occluded hydrogen in contact with hot heavy oil. CONSTITUTION:A hydrogen occluding metal is made to occlude hydrogen to form a metal hydride, which is brought into contact with heavy oil heated to 250-400 deg.C. Upon heating, the metal hydride is decomposed reversibly to release hydrogen. The higher the temp. of the metal, the higher the pressure of hydrogen released from the metal and this can be utilized in hydrogenation without use of a compressor. The metal hydride includes those of titanium, rare earth and magnesium-based metals and they have different hydrogen releasing temps. For example, titanium-based metal hydride which is relatively inexpensive releases hydrogen at room temp. -100 deg.C under pressure of a few - scores of atm.
