[Also in Division A4] A universal joint between tubular shafts 157, 177 comprises two cranked pins 172, 178 with their longitudinal axes mutually perpendicular, each pin having its cranked centre portion rigidly crimped in a respective shaft end and its ends 173, 175 received by radial bearing openings 185 in an intermediate ring member 183. In an adjustable chair (see Division A4) the shaft 177 is pivoted to a shaft 187 which drives, through a similar universal joint 219, an actuating lever 99 of the extension and support linkage for a retractable foot rest 93. The lever 99 is pivoted at 101 to a bracket 89 secured to the chair seat, and carries an extension 107 loosely secured thereto by a pin 109 and a lug 105. The linkage includes scissor links 111, 113 pivoted together at 115, link 111 being pivoted at 117 to extension 107 and link 113 being pivoted to the bracket 89. A link 121 connects the link 113 to the footrest 93, link 111 being connected to the footrest by a bell crank 119 pivoted at 127 to the link 121, and a link 129. As the lever 99 is turned through approximately one and a half right angles, the footrest is retracted to a position under the seat (Fig. 3, not shown). The shaft 157 carries a hand lever 153 by which the footrest is controlled. |
