The device, which can be used especially for determining the shear strength of spot welds between a nuclear-fuel assembly grid plate and a cylindrical cap securely fastened to a rod, comprises two members which can move with respect to each other along an axis and means for exerting a measurable force on these members in the direction of the axis. One of the said members is equipped with a radial bearing surface 42 intended for the axial transmission of forces between the tube 14 and the member, whilst the other member has a radial bearing surface 34 for the axial transmission of forces between the plate and the said other member, the first member 36 having an extension sliding in the tube so as to enable it to be guided with respect to the second member, whilst the other member has at least one surface for the guiding and lateral bearing of the face opposite the tube of at least one of the plates. <IMAGE>
