Device for covering and protecting a leisure area or meeting place, comprising covering awnings or the like which are capable of being stretched on fixed support elements. This device includes a lifting portal frame 1 placed transversely in the middle of the area to be covered, and comprising a horizontal beam 3 the ends of which may move along two vertical columns 2. At each end, a roll 6 is provided which is formed by a covering awning 5 which is capable of being extended up to the movable beam 3 of the middle portal frame, this roll being placed onto a horizontal support 7 located at the height planned for each end of the retractable roofing which is set up in this way. Furthermore a series of supporting cables 9 are capable of being stretched between the support 7 of each end roll 6 and the movable beam 3 of the middle portal frame, before the two covering awnings 5 are unrolled and spread. This device may be used for protecting various leisure areas, such as tennis courts, swimming pools; but it may also be used for protecting meeting places. <IMAGE>
