Process for the preparation of 5-fluorouracil derivatives

Compounds of the formula: <IMAGE> in which one of R<1> and R<2> is a hydroxyl-protective group and the other is certain glycoside residues which are defined in Claims 1, 12, 13 and 14 are prepared. The process comprises reacting a compound of the formula: <IMAGE> in which one of R<7> and R<8> is a metal ion and the other is a hydroxyl-protective group, with a glycoside halide and hydrolysing the resulting intermediate. Resulting esters can be hydrolysed, resulting alkyl esters can be converted into amides with amines. The compounds are valuable intermediates in the synthesis of final products with antitumour activity.
