PURPOSE:To read a picture even with a low-output exciting light source such as a laser diode by making exciting lights, which are emitted impulsively while staggering the emission time by controlling plural exciting light sources, incident on one deflecting means to scan a storage-type phosphor sheet. CONSTITUTION:Four laser diodes (LD) 11-14 are used as exciting light sources, and laser lights emitted from them are made incident on a galvanometer mirror 2 through collimating lenses 15-18, and deflected laser lights are converged by a converging lens 19 and is scanned on a storage-type phosphor sheet 3 in the direction of an arrow A (main scanning). Individual LDs 11-14 are controlled by a control circuit 21 to which a synchronizing signal S1 is inputted from a driver 20 of the galvanometer mirror 2 and are lit impulsively while staggering the lighting time, and thus, main scanning is performed in a speed which is about 4 times as high as the speed of main scanning in which the overall width of the sheet 3 is scanned with one exciting light.
